Fire Policy

Dormitories

Upon discovery of an unwanted fire by anyone in a dormitory, the following should be standard procedures:

If the fire alarm has not sounded, pull the nearest fire alarm pull station. This signal will be automatically sent to the dispatch officer in the University Police Department followed by the dispatch of an officer via signal 9 response to the location indicated on the annunciator panel located in the dispatcher's area.

The Frankfort fire Department should be summoned by the individual in charge of the dormitory at the time of emergency via 911 relaying all pertinent information such as the exact location of the fire, any known hazards such as the fire being in a mechanical or electrical room, and the most suitable approach to the scene.

The students in the dormitory should be vacated to a safe distance from the building to ensure their safety and not impede the arrival and activity of the responding fire personnel.

The rooms should be checked by the Dorm Director, resident assistants, dorm security and University Police, if requested, to ensure all students are out of harms way.

The University Police should ensure clear access to the area in question and accompany the fire personnel in ascertaining the location and status of the fire.

If the fire is found to be in the incipient stage, the dorm director, resident assistants, dorm security and/or the responding University Police officer should extinguish the fire with the portable extinguishers located in the corridors, dorm director's office or apartment, resident assistants' quarters in Young Hall, and in all mechanical and electrical rooms always ensuring there is a clear path of exiting the area where the fire is being extinguished.

If the unwanted fire is beyond the incipient stage, the Frankfort Fire Department will assume control of the fire scene and remain so until the all-clear signal is issued by the officer in charge of the responding fire service.

The University Police will direct traffic accordingly and assist the fire crew on site as requested by the O. I. C. of the responding fire crew.

If a line is laid by the Fire Department or any suppression activity performed beyond the use of portable extinguishers, the Vice President for Finance and Administration, the Director of Facilities Management, and the Director of Risk Management should be notified immediately.

The Vice President for Finance & Administration will further instruct as deemed appropriate.
